The incorporation of a viral DNA molecule into a bacterial DNA molecule permits the viral DNA to be replicated many times over as the bacterium divides. This helps to spread the viral DNA throughout the culture. At some point in the future, the prophage may become dislodged from the bacterial DNA whereupon it replicates itself many times and enters the normal lytic pathway.
